The São João Bridge is a railway structure, built to replace the Maria Pia Bridge, which due to the fact of being a single route, could not drain the traffic.
The project of this bridge is by Edgar Cardoso and, unlike other bridges in Porto that were built in arch, this one presents a different design with continuous multiple portico, three spans and two vertical pillars supported in the bed of the river.
The São João Bridge connects the Campanhã Station, in Oporto, to all destinations in the south, and was inaugurated on June 24, 1991, day of São João.
